The Eastland Disaster Historical Society - On July 24, 1915 the excursion ship, S. S. Eastland, capsized at its berth in the Chicago River, drowning more than 800 Western Electric Hawthorne Works employees, family members and friends. The purpose of the Eastland Disaster Historical Society is twofold. First, to provide education and information regarding the Eastland Disaster to ensure its place in history for future generations. And second, to commemorate those families whose lives were affected by the Eastland Disaster.
